Korean Sunscreen vs the US Version: Why It’s Worth Buying in Seoul

In the Korean sunscreen vs US comparison, the biggest surprise is that they’re often not the same product at all. Many Korean brands sell a different, US-only formula under the same name. If you want the version that built the hype, buy it in Seoul and check the back of the box before you pay.

Regulatory status and store details checked September 2026.

7 Korean sunscreens that I used

Quick answer

  • Korean sunscreen vs US versions: same name, different formula
  • The US treats sunscreen as a drug, so far fewer UV filters are allowed
  • Korean boxes show a PA rating (up to PA++++); US boxes don’t
  • US stores, including Olive Young’s US store and Sephora, sell US formulas
  • Carry it home in your suitcase rather than ordering online

Korean sunscreen vs US: same name, different product

Beauty of Joseon is the easiest example to see. The Korean Relief Sun is SPF 50+ PA++++. The US Daily Relief Sunscreen is SPF 40 Broad Spectrum, made with older US-approved filters.

This split hit US shelves in 2025. Beauty of Joseon pulled four sunscreens from the US and released US-only versions, and Skin1004 removed its sunscreens from its US site. So any Korean brand you buy in a US store today carries a US formula.

Why Korean sunscreen vs US formulas differ

In the US, sunscreen is an over-the-counter drug, and every UV filter needs FDA approval. In Korea, sunscreen is a cosmetic, so brands can choose from a much longer list of filters.

In June 2026, the FDA approved one new filter, bemotrizinol (Tinosorb S), the first since 1999. That sounds like big news, but it changes little. Popular Korean formulas mix several newer filters, and the others are still not approved in the US.

What PA++++ means

SPF measures protection from UVB, the rays that cause sunburn. PA measures protection from UVA, the rays linked to fine lines and dark spots. It runs from PA+ to PA++++, and four plus signs is the highest grade.

US labels only say “Broad Spectrum,” which means the product passed a UVA test but doesn’t tell you how strong the protection is. If anti-aging is why you wear sunscreen every day, the PA grade is the number to check.

How to spot the Korean formula in 10 seconds

The Korean sunscreen vs US difference is printed right on the box. Turn it over and check:

Korean formulaUS formula
SPF 50+ with PA+++ or PA++++“Broad Spectrum SPF,” no PA rating
Tinosorb S, Tinosorb M, Uvinul A Plus or Uvinul T 150Avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate or octocrylene
Korean ingredient list, often with an English stickerA “Drug Facts” panel

Can’t read the Korean list? Point your phone’s translation camera at it. Or look for 에칠헥실트리아존 (Uvinul T 150), the shortest filter name to spot.

Picking one at Olive Young

  • Choose a finish: essences and gels feel lightest, creams suit dry skin, and sticks are easy to reapply over makeup
  • Watch for “tone-up”: these add a white or pink tint that can look ashy on medium and deeper skin tones
  • Test on your jawline: the back of your hand won’t show how it sits on your face, so wait a minute for any white cast

Bringing Korean sunscreen home

  • Pack it in your suitcase; mailed orders of unapproved sunscreen can be held at the US border
  • Buy a few months’ supply, not a stockpile
  • Most face sunscreens are 50ml, under the 100ml carry-on limit
  • Keep tax-refunded tubes sealed until you’re home (see my Olive Young tax refund guide)
  • Olive Young Global stopped shipping to the US on May 29, 2026, so Seoul is the easiest place to restock

FAQ

What’s the biggest Korean sunscreen vs US difference?

The UV filters. Korean formulas use newer filters that aren’t approved in the US, and they show a PA rating for UVA protection.

Is Beauty of Joseon sunscreen the same in the US and Korea?

No. The Korean version is SPF 50+ PA++++. The US version is SPF 40 with older filters.

Will the new FDA approval bring Korean formulas to the US?

Not soon. It covers only one of the several filters Korean formulas use.

Can I bring Korean sunscreen back to the US?

Yes, most travelers carry a personal supply in their luggage. Mailed orders carry more risk of being held.

Sunscreen rules in the US are changing, and brands reformulate without much notice, so check the box every time you buy. This article is general information, not medical advice.
