Olive Young Tax Refund: How to Get Money Back at the Register

An Olive Young tax refund is easier than most visitors expect: you don’t need to visit an airport counter at all. At most tourist-area branches, the cashier takes the tax off right at the register.

Quick answer

  • Spend ₩15,000 or more on one receipt at one store
  • Show your physical passport before the cashier rings you up
  • The refund comes off your total instantly, so you just pay less
  • Instant refunds work for receipts under ₩1,000,000, up to about ₩5,000,000 for your whole trip
  • You get back a bit less than the full 10% because of a processing fee

How the Olive Young tax refund works

Korea adds 10% VAT to almost everything, and short-term visitors can get most of it back. The Olive Young tax refund makes this simple. Instead of paying the full price and claiming later, you get the discount on the spot.

Here’s what a receipt might look like:

SUNSCREEN SET 58,000
TONER 200ML 22,000
----------------------------
SUBTOTAL 80,000
TAX REFUND -5,800
----------------------------
YOU PAY 74,200

Look for the TAX REFUND line. If it’s not there, the refund didn’t go through.

Step by step at the register

  1. Bring your real passport. A photo or photocopy won’t work. The register scans the passport itself.
  2. Ask before they start scanning. Say “Tax refund, please,” or show the cashier this: 택스리펀 해주세요 (tek-seu-ri-peon hae-ju-se-yo). Once payment is done, it can’t be reopened.
  3. Check the receipt. The deduction should show as its own line before you leave the counter.

That’s it. It adds about 30 seconds to checkout.

Olive Young tax refund at smaller branches

Big branches in areas like Myeongdong handle instant refunds all the time. Some smaller neighborhood branches may give you a paper refund slip instead. If that happens, keep the slip and scan it with your passport at a tax refund kiosk at Incheon or Gimpo Airport before you fly.

Receipt under ₩15,000No refund

If you’re buying a lot, split it into two receipts under ₩1,000,000 to stay in the instant system.

Practical tips

  • Carry your passport on any day you plan to shop
  • Don’t open products you plan to take home; refunded items should leave Korea unused
  • Keep all receipts in one envelope until you’re home
  • Receipts from different stores or different days can’t be combined to reach ₩15,000
  • Look for the “Tax Free” sign at the entrance or ask the cashier if unsure
