A2O LITE, a new nine-member girl group, hit No. 1 on Melon, one of Korea’s biggest music charts, just 29 hours after its debut. According to news reports, that’s the fastest a rookie group’s debut song has done it since Melon revamped its chart in 2021. The group was created by Lee Soo-man, who left SM Entertainment, which he founded. A2O LITE is among the first groups he has debuted since his ban on producing music in Korea ended. As someone who lives in Seoul, here is what I found.

Why I Like A2O LITE
I’ll be honest: I like A2O LITE because it sounds like K-pop from about 20 years ago, upgraded. To me it feels like an updated version of BoA, and some Korean commenters even joke about “BoA’s cell division.” A few members also remind me of groups from SM Entertainment, like f(x) and Girls’ Generation. The music is addictive too. There’s a Korean expression, “a familiar taste is the scariest,” and that’s how “NEON” feels: a familiar flavor, upgraded into something a little scary. This is just my personal opinion, so I’d love to know what you think.

The Group and the Song
The members are Young, Oa, Ayune, Aijing, Himeki, Rada, Xili, Vora and Merci, from several countries. Reports differ on the exact list. The company, A2O Entertainment, also debuted a 15-member boy group, A2O SOUL, at the same time. Lee Soo-man sold his stake in SM to HYBE in 2023, and a three-year non-compete agreement kept him from producing music in Korea until February this year.
Their debut song “NEON” came out on October 13. It’s 3 minutes 28 seconds long and was produced by Yoo Young-jin. One report says it draws on earlier K-pop rather than following current trends, with strong group choreography, high notes and a dance break.
Beyond Melon: The Global Charts
According to a Korean news report, “NEON” also did well overseas:
- No. 1 in eight countries and regions in total, including Apple Music Korea and the overall iTunes charts in Italy and Malaysia
- Entered iTunes charts in 11 countries and regions and Apple Music charts in 30
- No. 14 on Spotify’s Korea daily chart
A2O SOUL’s “SUPERSTAR” reached No. 1 on the iTunes K-pop chart in Luxembourg and entered iTunes charts in seven countries and Apple Music charts in four. Chart positions change quickly, so these are early results.
The Memes
The song also spread online through memes. Korean listeners noticed that part of the chorus sounds like Korean words about marriage, and fans made parodies. Memes appeared before any dance challenge, which is the opposite of how K-pop songs usually go viral.
The memes were everywhere. Some fans even made clips that put characters from Park Chan-wook’s film Oldboy into the “NEON” dance.
